I used the PC Tools Spyware Doctor software from Symantec for 6 months and then had a product update from symantec that broke the application so I could no longer get updates for the antivirus software database. After 3 months and efforts to get tech support from symantec for Spyware Doctor I am still with a broken application and any attempt to update the anti-virus update I get the message “error while unpacking product, code LP5″ and the update fails.

Considering all the free spyware applications available I expected to get some level of support from Symantec for their PC Tools Spyware Doctor but was in error. Pay your money and hope that the application works for the year of use you are buying (need to keep paying and paying year after year) – but if Symantec fails to provide the support and the application leaves you vulnerable you really have no recourse.

I am switching to the open source ClamWin for my Windows PC. It is free and the support is better than I have gotten from Symantec.

Spyware Doctor found several viruses that Nortons failed to find. I had a major virus on my PC that kept coming back after Nortons got rid of it, Spyware was the only thing that worked. It has an option to do a partial scan which takes roughly 15 minutes and a full scan that takes roughly an hour. You can also program to have a full auto scan once a week. This program is well worth the price.
