I cannot get this computer to recognize my external USB hard drives, so I have been trying in vain for a week to get help from Gateway tech support.

The emails from my ordeal with Gateway tech support have gone something like this. . .

Me: Contacted tech support via website with a detailed description of the problem.
Gateway (next day): You need to register your laptop.
Me (15 minutes later): Fair enough. Done. Now, how do I fix the USB hard drive problem?
Gateway (next day): You did not fully complete the registration form. We need two contact phone numbers.
Me (5 minutes later): Done. Now, let’s get to fixing this problem.
Gateway (next day): Try rebooting the computer.
Me (10 minutes later): Tried that. What’s next?
Gateway (next day): Are you getting any error message when you boot the computer?
Me (5 minutes later): No error messages. What’s next?
Gateway (next day): Is your USB hard drive listed under “Hard Disk Drives” in the “Computer” tab?
Me (5 minutes later): As I said in my original problem description, my USB hard drive is not listed in the “Computer” tab. What’s next?
Gateway (next day): Do you see any splats, question marks, or red X in the device manager?
Me (10 minutes later): Nope. Now what?
Gateway (7 days 6 hrs 21 mins after initial report of problem): This problem is beyond our ability to solve. You will need to call Answers by Gateway for further assistance, at a rate of $2. 95 per minute.

I’m boxing it back up and returning it.

This is the first and last Gateway product I will ever buy.

I purchased this laptop because it had an Intel i5 processor and 17. 3 in. display for the same price as a similarly equipped HP with an i3 and 15. 6 in. display. After a quick delivery by Amazon the computer began to malfunction on the second day. The mouse pad would not respond about 40% of the time and when I would click on certain programs nothing would happen. After a second day failure I would not recommend this laptop. On the upside, Amazon was very easy to deal with for the return. I think I will purchase the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15. 6-Inch Laptop as a replacement. In the end Gateway gets one star, but Amazon gets five.

The good: i5 M430 processor. For the most part, I only run simple productivity software and surf the internet, but the speed is an improvement over my old P4 desktop. The 17. 3″ widescreen is bright and crisp. HDMI out is handy for streaming Netflix to the HDTV.

The bad: I would have expected some video editing software included (even if they were the ‘express’ or ‘lite’ versions), but at this price I shouldn’t have. Also, some Window 7 compatibility issues with existing network printer. The driver is not available. The position of the pgup and pgdn keys on the numberpad is undesireable.

Overall: For the price point this system performs well, but I would have liked to have seen some more software.

Laptop is exactly what I wanted. A BIG Screen! So far the machine runs great. Excellent screen, big keyboard with numeric pad, and the wireless has great strenght. Only thing I can give a negative to is the battery. I thought it would last a little longer than it does.

    Great Laptop.

I bought this Laptop from Amazon last Monday and paid the $20 for 2 day shipping. Well I got it the next day and I didn’t even have to pay the $40 for next day delivery. On top of that, there was a lot of snow on the ground and lots of business’ were closed that day, which I was surprised I got it. As for the laptop, I like it a lot. I have been using a 15 inch HP Pavilion and it’s going to take a while to get used to the setup of this keyboard and Win7, but I’ll get there. It is way fast and I like the number pad on it. The only bad thing about this so far I have found is the power cord comes out of it really easy, like if I move it from one place to another, I have to make sure it’s still plugged in, and the second so far is that it detects my wireless network really slow when I open it up to use it. It takes about a minute or two, and I think if it sees my wireless network from previous use, it shouldn’t have to detect it again. That’s all for now.
