. . . But I’m giving it a 5-star rating anyway to offset all these negative 1-star reviewers who have not played it either, but are here just to gripe about copy protection.

If you can trash it without playing it, I can praise it without playing it!

Maybe Amazon will get a clue about rating abuse.

This game is amazing. Thrilling, terrifying, moving, confusing, amusing, compelling, and very dark. BioShock isn’t simply the sign of gaming realising its true cinematic potential, but one where a game straddles so many entertainment art forms so expertly that it’s the best demonstration yet how flexible this medium can be. It’s no longer just another shooter wrapped up in a pretty game engine, but a story that exists and unfolds inside the most convincing and elaborate and artistic game world ever conceived. One thing, there is NO rootkit. There have been some problems getting the game to install as Irrational Games authentication servers had some problems the first few days and some people had problems inputting their reg code properly. This is a minor issue, but there are obviously some immature and bitter people here. Since so many others have spent the time to review this game already, I will post the reviews I found on metacritic. com:

    100 – EuroGamer
    100 – Gamer 2. 0
    100 – Game Revolution
    100 – GameDaily
    100 – G4 TV
    100 – Gaming Age
    97 – IC-Games
    97 – IGN
    96 – PC Zone UK
    96 – Cheat Code Central
    95- GamerNode
    95 – PC Gamer UK
    95 – GameTrailers
    94 – FiringSquad
    91 – AtomicGamer
    90 – GameSpot

This game was built for only those customers that have the newest (less than one year old) and most expensive graphics cards. Do not buy it unless your PC’s capabilities can exceed the recommended requirements. Minimum requirements don’t matter, it will be so slow and lacking in detail that you will be unsatisfied. There are also hidden graphics requirements (like the shader problem) that could make it impossible even to play the game at all. As someone that has bought over 250 games over the past 20 years, I was sorry to see that 2K software didn’t understand understand the basics about shipping software that meets customer needs.

I love video games and always have, but is it just me or has the first person shooter genre become todays sidescroller. I mean seriously, we have more diverse ways to make games now then ever, so what is with 8 out of 10 games being a freaking fps. I used to love fps games until one day when halo came out, and even though I have never played it nor have I ever owned an xbox or a 360, it still seems that since the halo series almost every game is in fps format. I have to say I still like to sit down and play a good fps, but I just can’t help but believe that in a time when we are capable of great diversity amongst video games we are limiting ourselves to one genre. Please, before you try another fps, go grab the red star for ps2 or even contra and try those games on because I can assure that even though they may not be as appealing to some due to the lack of depth and story, they make up for it by being more than average in the fun dept, as well as in challenge.

Everyone who reviews this is whining to high Heaven about SecuROM because of course no one on Amazon has any idea what a review is. Everyone thinks that this is a messageboard where we’re all dying to hear their deepest, darkest thoughts on everything under the sun, instead of hearing whether a game is good or not.

I will talk about my experience with SecuROM without all the spooky, 1984 language you’ll find in every other paranoid review.
I have installed and uninstalled this game seven (count ‘em seven!) times since I got it and with minimum hassle. You might now be asking yourself, “But how is that possible? The other reviews I read said that if you try to install this game more than once Black Hawk helicopters appear in the sky over your house and use flamethrowers on your cat and loved ones. ” Maybe this has happened to someone else’s cat, but what happened to me was I bought a new computer and Bioshock was the first game I installed as it was a new release at that time. The computer was totally FUBARed, so we had to re-format it several times. Two times I re-installed the game and the computer was still messed up. I ended up having to replace some parts that were defective and then re-installed the game again. Low and behold the game refused because of this SecuROM thing. I was advised to call customer service. Guess what, geniuses! I did and I spent five minutes on the phone and had no problem getting the game re-installed.

Do you guys know why SecuROM exists? It exists because companies have to make money to stay in business and do you guys have any idea how many people out there refuse to buy anything? If you have ever known anyone who works in the IT field you know probably at least five people who pirate EVERYTHING. I know people who steal things just to be stealing something; they pirate games they don’t even intend to play, just because they’re free.
Companies are forced to try to protect themselves somehow. Can you really blame them for wanting to get paid for the games they make? So maybe instead of crying your heads off about what a bunch of big bullies EA and 2K are, you guys should be angry at the pirates who actually did this to you. And the funny part is I would bet my entire paycheck that half of you people are pirates who just can’t seem to draw a parallel between your theft and what it’s forced companies to do to people who actually are honest.
Am I saying that I’m in favor of SecuROM? No, of course not. I hate it like everyone else, but I am saying that I understand why it exists and that a lot of people are misplacing the blame.

My only problem with the game is that it doesn’t install very easily with Vista. There are a lot of sound bugs and they require someone with some computer know-how to fix (or I guess you could call tech support). I feel like the developers were rushed when they created the characters in the game as the splicers are all more or less the same as each other and after a while it gets sort of repetitive. You fight basically the same five people over and over again. Everything else about the game is great.
2K is also a great company. They answer questions in a timely manner and they give away free stuff on their messageboard. What else could you ask for? I got a free Bioshock 2 record (music, like for a record player) just for sending them my address. They didn’t even ask for a SASE or anything. You can’t beat that. Not many companies give away free stuff for no reason. And they hold tons of trivia contests and so on on the board where you can win prizes and the woman who runs the contests is so nice that she usually ends up giving everyone a prize just for participating, even though you didn’t win.
